Belles look for lifeline
Doncaster Belles, England’s most famous women’s football club, are set to be shut down unless an eleventh-hour cash injection can be found. Is this Belles' last match?
After coming to the end of a successful partnership arrangement with their major sponsor of the last four years, the Belles have plunged into a financial crisis that has put them on the brink of bankruptcy.
Chairman Jonathan James revealed last night: “We are absolutely desperate. We will have to shut the club down after Sunday’s match with Arsenal unless we can somehow bring some cash into the club this week. At this point we haven’t even got the money to cover the cost of hiring a coach to get us down to Arsenal.”
BELLES boss John Buckley pledged his team would go out in a blaze of glory if Sunday's game at Arsenal proves to be their final match.I really, really that they sort out the money issues. No team should have to go through this -- and no top men's team would go through this. There's more information on their official site, along with a call for help.
Arsenal have succeeded the Doncaster club as the top women's team in the country and seldom lose.
But Buckley said: "This club has a proud tradition and we will go down there and give it all we've got."
